Gifts for Sake and Whisky Lovers: Japanese Cups, Sets and Glasses

For someone who enjoys sake or whisky, the cup is part of the drink. It changes how the drink looks in the light, how it feels in the hand, and how slowly it is savored. A cup or flask made by a Japanese master kiln turns an ordinary evening glass into a small ritual — and it is used again and again, long after the holidays.
This guide gathers our picks for sake and whisky lovers: sake sets for sharing, guinomi cups to collect, porcelain cups for whisky and shochu, gold-leaf glassware, and pieces carved or painted entirely by hand.
Sake sets: a flask and cups to share

Kihaku Glass by Uchiki: gold and silver leaf scattered by hand.
A Japanese sake set pairs a serving flask — a tokkuri, or a lipped katakuchi pourer — with small cups. In Japan, it is polite not to pour your own: friends fill each other’s cups, which makes a sake set a gift meant to be shared.
Shinemon Kiln’s Ginga (“galaxy”) set is one of JTOPIA’s longest-selling series, with countless nebulae seeming to shine across a deep glaze developed from yohen oil-spot tenmoku. Uchiki’s Kihaku Glass set takes a different path: clear glass scattered with gold and silver leaf using a leaf-laying technique from Yamanaka lacquerware, so no two pieces share the same pattern.
Guinomi: a cup with its own character

Sixteen cups, sixteen Shinemon glazes.
A guinomi is a sake cup a little larger than the tiny ochoko, made to be held and turned in the hand. Many sake drinkers collect them, choosing a different cup to suit the sake, the season or the mood.
The set of sixteen gathers Shinemon Kiln’s glazes in one box — deep red shinsha, the Ginga galaxy glaze, indigo and lapis “water drop” glazes, yuteki and shiro tenmoku and more — so every guest can pick a favorite. For a single cup, the Aoki-Myojo guinomi takes the classic tenmoku form; you can read more about the glaze in our introduction to yuteki tenmoku.
Porcelain cups for whisky and shochu

Kinkamon: golden crystals that bloom in the glaze.
In Japan, cups like these are made for shochu, a distilled spirit often served on the rocks or with water — and they suit whisky just as well. Porcelain fired at high temperature is hard and non-absorbent, so it keeps no odor of its own and lets the aroma of the drink come through.
The Youkou and Gekkou pair — “sunlight” and “moonlight” — finishes Shinemon Kiln’s Aoki-Myojo glaze with a rim of genuine gold on one cup and platinum on the other. The tiered Kinkamon cup has a form that recalls cut bamboo, with golden-brown crystals layered over gold, tea and silver tones.
Gold leaf for the glass

Shimoa cups: Yamanaka lacquer and gold leaf outside, mirror polish inside.
Uchiki, a Yamanaka lacquerware maker with a history of some 130 years, brings gold leaf to everyday glassware. The Kihaku on-the-rocks glass is scattered with gold and silver leaf, each pattern different from the next.
The Shimoa beer cups combine Yamanaka lacquer and gold leaf with a mirror polish from Tsubame-Sanjo. The double-walled cups keep drinks at temperature and prevent condensation — a cold beer stays cold, and the table stays dry.
Carved and painted by hand

Red and white plum blossoms from Gagyu Kiln.
Mikihiko Yamaguchi of Yamamiki Kiln, a certified traditional craftsman with more than forty years at the wheel, carves peonies into pure white porcelain. Held up to the light, the carved flowers glow as the light passes through. The fine mouth of the flask is shaped for an easy pour.
Gagyu Kiln’s sake set is painted with red and white plum blossoms over flowing hakeme brushwork on dark brown clay — a technique designated an intangible cultural property of Nagasaki Prefecture. In Japan, the plum is the first flower to bloom after winter, a sign of good fortune. (Read more about Gagyu Kiln.)
More gifts for the evening
A pair of cups makes a thoughtful gift for two — one for each, to be raised together.
