Creator Description

Arita-yaki, boasting a history and tradition spanning over four centuries, stands as the origin of Japanese porcelain. Widely cherished from the finest pieces to everyday tableware, Arita-yaki represents Japan's renowned ceramic art. In recent years, mass-produced items using printing and molding techniques have become prevalent, leading to the disappearance of authentic handmade works and artisans. However, Sōjirō Kiln has continued to create traditional pieces using hand-wheel throwing and hand-painting.

As a designated traditional craftsman recognized by the government, with over 40 years of pottery experience, the skilled craftsmanship of the porcelain produced by Sōjirō Kiln exudes a profound and authentic charm unique to handmade creations. In recent times, the kiln has received recognition from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, being honored as a contemporary master artisan for its exceptional skills.

The sometsuke (blue-and-white) designs, featuring a base of blue influenced by the antique Imari style, showcase a harmonious blend of smoky gradients achieved through shading techniques. The subtle interplay of light and dark, along with the smooth lines of the hand-painted motifs, adds to the overall sophistication of the pieces.
