Yamanaka Lacquerware - [Kihaku Glass] Japanese Sake Set, Full Gold Leaf

Sale price¥41,200

A sake set of unstinting luxury, alight with Kanazawa leaf.

400 Years of Kaga Beauty
A new style of sake set, born where 400 years of Kaga’s traditional beauty meet modern technique. Its beauty settles naturally into a modern living space and brings grace and colour to everyday life — a sake set finished to do just that.

What Kihaku Glass Is
Applying kannyu (crackle), a leaf-laying technique of Yamanaka lacquerware from Ishikawa Prefecture, Kihaku Glass wraps the entire surface of the vessel in a lavish layer of gold leaf — a splendid craft object full of refined elegance. Because skilled artisans apply the leaf by hand, one piece at a time, delicate variations arise in the look of the gold, and no two are the same: you can enjoy a beautiful scene that exists nowhere else in the world.

Leaf on Clear Glass
Kihaku Glass brings out the elegance of Japanese culture. Modern in its appearance, it still has the charm of making that respects traditional technique. Kihaku Glass was born by applying kannyu — the leaf-laying technique of Yamanaka lacquerware, handed down across time — to glass full of transparency. The beauty of Kanazawa leaf, with its sense of the mystery of chance, is drawn out to the full, and the pride of Japanese craftsmanship comes through as depth of appeal and a sense of luxury.

Made by Uchiki, Founded 130 Years Ago
Uchiki Co., Ltd. is a long-established company making traditional Yamanaka lacquerware crafts, Kihaku Glass among them. Its craft objects, combining the hand-worked kihaku technique of skilled artisans with Yamanaka lacquer, are vessels of a singular beauty, no two patterns alike. They are used in fine Japanese restaurants, have been chosen as commemorative gifts at important government ceremonies, and the name “Uchiki Kihaku” is highly regarded around the world.

A “Takumi” Company
Uchiki has also been selected as a “Takumi” (master craftsman) company by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the harmony of Kanazawa leaf it creates is sure to be valued ever more highly in the years to come.

What Is a Guinomi?
A guinomi is a small cup for Japanese sake, held in one hand. Among sake vessels it is considered to hold a particularly high rank, and it is often chosen as the vessel for a special drink.

Why a Paulownia Box
Paulownia wood is light, resists moisture and insects, and moves with changes in humidity — which is why it has been used in Japan for centuries to store what is valuable. A piece delivered in a paulownia box arrives ready to give, and the box itself is part of the gift.
