When one speaks of a shogun famed for splendour, it is Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. In the Muromachi period he ruled the land as the third of his line, and his name remains in history as the shogun of the Ashikaga family at its height.

The Sun King of Japan
The “Sun King” that Japan produced. To display his authority to the lords who served him across the country, he is said to have honoured a refined splendour and to have loved gold and elegance.

A Refined Kind of Luxury
Truly, it took three generations to come into full stature. The Golden Pavilion, splendid yet refined; and Zeami, whom he protected, known for the elegant Noh costumes and for the famous treatise “Fushikaden”. What they share is a refined kind of luxury — a “beauty of the profound and mysterious” with six hundred years of tradition behind it. This work is Shinemon’s expression of his reverence for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who held to that splendour.

A Tenmoku Bowl in Gold
The refined, graceful form of a tenmoku bowl, spreading outward from the foot, is Shinemon’s alone. “Kinkamon Chawan” is a fine work thrown by Shinemon, known as a rare talent of Japanese ceramic art, who has received many prizes at the Nitten, Japan’s largest art exhibition, and won renown for his splendid manner. This work was made by the advanced technique of firing a lavish tea-gold glaze, used without stint.
