Japanese Teacup (Yunomi) "Ryurin Yuteki Tenmoku" - Shinemon Kiln, Arita Ware

Sale price¥12,400

A black that reads as depth rather than colour, scattered with spots that catch gold as you turn it. A teacup with enough weight to slow the hand that lifts it.

A Vessel That Holds the Cosmos
Oil-spot tenmoku — yuteki tenmoku — is the glaze behind some of Japan’s designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The spots are crystals that surface during firing, scattered across the glaze like drops of oil on water. Feudal lords and men of letters, Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi among them, prized such vessels as bowls that held a picture of the universe.

Ryurin: The Scales of a Rising Dragon
Shinemon Kiln’s oil-spot tenmoku is also called amakakeru-ryurin, the scales of a dragon crossing the heavens. The black carries a weight and a gold sheen that few glazes reach, and the pattern is read as a dragon ascending — an auspicious form, and one reason this cup is so often chosen as a gift.

Exceptional Functionality
The material is high-grade natural pottery stone from Amakusa in Kyushu, fired above 1,300°C. The surface feels like silk yet is hard and non-absorbent, so stains do not settle and care is simple. There is none of the earthy scent of stoneware, letting the aroma of the tea come through. Microwave and dishwasher safe, with excellent heat and cold retention, and weighted to sit steadily in the hand.

A Perfect Gift
Presented in a paulownia box with a booklet on the artisan, ready to give as it is.
