Fukusen Kiln Wine Glass "Shikohai" - Iro-Nabeshima Style, Arita Ware

Sale price¥418,700

The “Shikohai” is a fine wine glass in which the transparency of glass is joined with the traditional beauty of Arita ware.

Prized by the Courts of Europe
From the 17th century, Arita and Imari ware crossed the seas and spread across the world. Their quality and design captivated the royalty and nobility of Europe, and passionate collectors are still found all over the world today.

Painted in the Iro-Nabeshima Style
The finely detailed painting, in the Iro-Nabeshima (somenishiki) style, is a fine achievement that recalls the Imari ware of former days. Even in the hands of skilled artisans, a piece takes as long as half a year to complete — a work into which a great deal of time, care and passion has gone.

A Stem Fired at 1,300°C
The stem of the wine glass is made from high-grade pottery stone from Amakusa in Kyushu, and fired at temperatures rising to 1,300°C. Because of that intense heat, finishing a stem that stands straight without warping was extremely difficult, and it took trial and error again and again. This is a wine glass that carries the artisans’ romance of uniting beauty and technique.

Arita Romance Glass, by Fukusen Kiln
The “Arita Romance Glass” is a wine glass in which the transparency of glass and the beauty of Arita ware bring out each other’s qualities, leaving an impression of lustrous colour and dazzling gold. Please enjoy this meeting with a distinguished kiln of Arita ware and its 400-year tradition. Fukusen Kiln was born in the town of Arita, blessed by nature, and its modern designs live on not only in Japan but in the West as well; it is the wish of Fukusen, who opened a kiln in Arita, that the traditional beauty and technique nurtured over a long time may be of use in every age.
